The Supreme Court on Friday welcomed a delegation of senior judges from five countries, with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant introducing the visiting dignitaries in Courtroom No. 1 ahead of events marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
The delegation included Nepal Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma, a judge of the UK Supreme Court, a judge of the Supreme Court of Bhutan, and judges from Brazil and Kenya.
Welcoming the delegation, Attorney General R Venkataramani described India as a confluence of diverse cultures, legal traditions and constitutional values. He expressed confidence that the scheduled interactions would provide the visiting judges with an opportunity to understand India’s evolving jurisprudence and indigenous legal traditions.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also welcomed the delegation, observing that a two-day visit could offer only a glimpse of India’s diversity, cultural heritage and legal ecosystem.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Vikas Singh welcomed the visiting judges and described their presence as significant in the context of UNCITRAL’s 60th anniversary celebrations. He observed that the Indian judiciary and its jurisprudence continue to receive growing international recognition.
The interaction took place ahead of commemorative programmes marking six decades of UNCITRAL, the principal United Nations body responsible for the harmonisation, modernisation and progressive development of international trade law. Established by the UN General Assembly in 1966, UNCITRAL is commemorating its 60th anniversary in 2026.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, UNCITRAL has encouraged member States to organise commemorative events between July 2026 and July 2027 to bring together judges, government representatives, academics, arbitrators and legal practitioners to deliberate on developments in international commercial law, cross-border dispute resolution and global trade regulation.
