Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade on Monday administered the oath of office to Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
The Central government last week cleared Justice Agrawal’s appointment as Chief Justice, following the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on August 31.
Justice Agrawal was elevated as an additional judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court in September 2013 and was made a permanent judge in March 2016.
His appointment as Chief Justice comes amid a controversy surrounding Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, who had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court since September 2025.
The controversy arose after Supreme Court Justice Sandeep Mehta recently wrote to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, seeking Justice Sharma’s transfer out of Rajasthan and the appointment of a regular Chief Justice from another High Court.
Justice Mehta raised concerns and allegations regarding Justice Sharma’s exercise of administrative powers and the listing of cases.
The issue also triggered protests by lawyers at both the Jaipur and Jodhpur benches of the Rajasthan High Court. The protesting lawyers demanded that Justice Sharma be divested of his charge as Acting Chief Justice.
Justice Sharma, who is due to retire later this month, has denied the allegations made against him.
Justice Agrawal’s appointment as the regular Chief Justice comes against the backdrop of this controversy and brings an end to the period during which the Rajasthan High Court had been functioning under an Acting Chief Justice.
