The Delhi High Court on Monday allowed the urgent listing of a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the building collapse in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, which claimed six lives and left several others injured.
The matter was mentioned before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, with a lawyer seeking an immediate hearing in view of the gravity of the incident.
The lawyer informed the Bench that two buildings had collapsed in the area and that around 30 students were feared to be trapped under the debris. Taking note of the urgency, the Court permitted the matter to be listed for hearing later in the day.
The Satya Niketan incident has brought renewed attention to the safety and structural condition of buildings in densely populated parts of the national capital. The area, located near South Delhi’s Venkateshwar College and known for its concentration of student accommodation and commercial establishments, has witnessed rapid construction and redevelopment over the years.
The collapse of buildings in such localities raises questions concerning building permissions, structural safety, compliance with municipal regulations and the monitoring of potentially vulnerable structures by civic authorities.
The PIL before the High Court seeks judicial intervention in connection with the incident and the broader safety concerns arising from building collapses in Delhi. The urgent mention was made against the backdrop of the reported casualties and fears that people, including students, could still be trapped beneath the rubble.
The High Court’s decision to allow the matter to be taken up on an urgent basis indicates the seriousness with which it has viewed the situation. The proceedings are expected to bring into focus the responsibilities of the authorities concerned in preventing such incidents, ensuring compliance with building norms and protecting residents and occupants of buildings in vulnerable areas.
The Court’s intervention could also provide an opportunity to examine whether adequate inspections and preventive measures were undertaken before the collapse and what steps are required to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
