The Union Government has approved the appointment of three judicial officers as judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court, acting on the recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.
The appointees are Santosh Sharma, Sushma Sawant and Sudhir Kumar. Their elevation follows the Collegium’s recommendation dated August 18, 2026, proposing their appointment to the High Court.
The development was announced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The appointments form part of the continuing process of filling judicial vacancies in the High Courts through recommendations originating from the Collegium.
The Supreme Court Collegium had considered the three judicial officers for elevation after examining their suitability for appointment to the constitutional court. The Collegium’s resolution records the recommendation of Santosh Sharma, Sushma Sawant and Sudhir Kumar for appointment as judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
With the Centre approving the recommendations, the next procedural step will involve the formal issuance of appointment notifications and the subsequent administration of the oath of office.
The appointments assume significance in the context of the broader exercise to strengthen judicial capacity in the High Courts and ensure that sanctioned judicial strength is progressively filled.
The development comes amid a wider round of judicial appointments approved by the Union Government following recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium. The Centre has recently cleared appointments across several High Courts as part of efforts to fill vacancies in the higher judiciary.
The Chhattisgarh High Court has also recently seen changes at the level of its Chief Justice. Justice Krushna Ram Mahapatra was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court following the retirement of the previous incumbent.
The elevation of the three judicial officers will add to the Bench strength of the Chhattisgarh High Court and is expected to augment its capacity to deal with the substantial volume of pending litigation.
The appointments also reflect the constitutional mechanism governing judicial elevations, under which the Supreme Court Collegium evaluates and recommends candidates before the executive completes the appointment process.
The latest clearances therefore mark another step in the ongoing effort to address vacancies and strengthen the institutional capacity of the higher judiciary.
