Seven new judges take oath in Delhi High Court, Bench strength rises to 50

The Delhi High Court on Monday inducted seven judicial officers into its Bench, taking its present strength to 50 judges against a sanctioned complement of 60.

Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administered the oath of office to the newly appointed judges at a ceremony held at the High Court. The elevations bring substantial experience from Delhi’s subordinate judiciary to the High Court Bench.

The seven judges are Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj.

While Sharma and Saxena have been appointed as permanent judges, Sharma-I, Parashar, Choudhary, Bhatt and Bhardwaj have joined the Bench as additional judges. Sharma and Saxena took their oath in English, whereas the remaining five judges were sworn in in Hindi.

The Union government formally notified the appointments on September 19, following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendations made earlier this month. The Collegium had proposed the elevation of eight judicial officers on September 10. However, the government notification covered seven names, leaving out Gurvinder Pal Singh from the appointments notified so far.

The newly elevated judges have held several significant positions in Delhi’s district judiciary. Arun Bhardwaj, prior to his elevation, was serving as the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court. Bharat Parashar had been functioning as Secretary General of the Supreme Court.

Nisha Sahay Saxena had served as Principal District and Sessions Judge of the Rohini district, while Sanjay Sharma-I had headed the North-East district judiciary at Karkardooma. Dinesh Bhatt was serving as Principal District Judge-cum-Special Judge under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Rouse Avenue Courts.

With the latest appointments, the Delhi High Court now has 50 judges in position, leaving a shortfall of 10 judges from its sanctioned strength. The sanctioned complement comprises 45 permanent and 15 additional judges.

The induction of seven members of the district judiciary comes against the backdrop of the High Court’s substantial judicial docket. Their elevation also adds extensive trial-court and judicial-administrative experience to the High Court Bench.
