A Delhi sessions court on Monday issued notice to former BJP MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on an appeal filed by four women wrestlers challenging his acquittal in a sexual harassment case.
Special Judge Digvinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Court also issued notice to co-accused Vinod Tomar, who was acquitted along with Singh. The matter will next be heard on October 9.
The wrestlers have challenged the trial court’s August 3, 2026 order acquitting Singh and Tomar.
In their appeal, the wrestlers have alleged that the trial court’s findings were based on “surmises and conjectures” and reflected “archaic and stereotypical assumptions” about the expected conduct of victims of sexual assault and harassment.
The plea contends that the trial court focused on minor inconsistencies and isolated discrepancies while rejecting the prosecution case, instead of assessing the evidence as a whole and considering witness corroboration.
The case arose from allegations of sexual harassment made by six women wrestlers against Singh. The Delhi Police registered an FIR following their complaints and filed a chargesheet against Singh on June 15, 2023, for offences under Sections 354, 354A, 354D and 506(1) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
On May 10, 2024, the trial court framed charges against Singh for sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of women in relation to allegations concerning five women wrestlers.
However, on August 3, 2026, the trial court acquitted Singh and Tomar, describing the case as “false and fabricated” and observing that it appeared to have a “political” motivation.
The trial court had questioned the delay in raising the allegations and observed that the complaints appeared to have been “rehearsed”, “well-practised” and “planted”. It also noted that one of the witnesses had not made allegations of sexual harassment against Singh before the wrestlers began their protest in 2023.
The court further observed that the formal complaints filed before the police on April 21, 2023 contained similar allegations and were prepared in a manner it described as “tailor made”.
The trial court also relied on the fact that the allegations related to incidents dating back several years and that the women had continued to maintain cordial relations with Singh, including attending family functions and wedding ceremonies.
The acquittal has now been challenged before the sessions court by the four wrestlers.
