Kerala Congress Chief Sunny Joseph issues unconditional apology for post against CJI on party’s official X handle

The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Sunny Joseph has tendered an unconditional apology over a controversial post targeting the Chief Justice of India (CJI) that was published on the party’s official X handle earlier this month.

The apology was issued in response to a legal notice sent by Supreme Court advocate and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Joint Secretary Meenesh Dubey, who had taken objection to the post and sought accountability from the state Congress leadership.

In a letter responding to the notice, Joseph reiterated the Congress party’s commitment to the Constitution, judicial independence and respect for the constitutional office of the Chief Justice of India.

The KPCC said that the party holds the judiciary and the office of the CJI in high regard and regretted the publication of the contentious post.

The letter further stated that Vijay Thottathil, the Kerala Congress leader responsible for operating the party’s official social media handle and publishing the post, had been removed from his position. The party has also directed him to issue a public apology over the incident.

The controversy arose after a post concerning the CJI was published from the KPCC’s official X account on October 12. The post prompted objections from members of the legal fraternity, leading Dubey to issue a legal notice to Joseph in his capacity as the state Congress president.

Dubey’s notice sought a response from the party leadership over the remarks made against the head of the Indian judiciary. Following the notice, the KPCC sent a written response conveying an unconditional apology for the post and reaffirming its respect for the judiciary.

The development comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding public commentary on constitutional authorities and the importance of maintaining institutional dignity. The KPCC’s response seeks to address the objection raised through the legal notice by expressing regret, reiterating its commitment to constitutional values and announcing action against the person responsible for the post.
