The former Chief Justice of India UU Lalit said that nowadays judges pay more attention to showing their talent than being justice-oriented.
The former CJI used a term quotational jurisprudence which he said is nothing but the latest trend of judgments being delivered which have quotations delivered by different courts including the High Courts and trial courts.
UU Lalit mentioned how the talent is merely used or exhibiting the talent with words and less focus is put on justice which is of more importance. The justice expressed his concern over this trend.
He was commenting on the growing impact of the media on the judiciary.
Former Justice mentioned that it seems to him sometime that the judges think that their judgment would be the last judgment on the point and “therefore it will be helpful for those who come out with digests on that issue.”
The former CJI made these remarks during a dialogue dialogue titled “Conversations on Justice” that was organised in honour of recently retired Supreme Court judge Justice S Ravindra Bhat by his family and friends and current and former law clerks.
The program had presence of Justice Mukta Gupta, Justice S Muralidhar, Justice Badar Ahmed, and Justice R Basant,it was moderated by Senior Advocate Raju Ramachandran and advocate Malvika Prasad.
The event was held at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
