Kerala High Court judge Justice VG Arun has appreciated the people for raising their kids outside the influence of religion by not attaching any religion or caste to their names.
Terming such kids as the promise of tomorrow, Justice Arun said that in future, they would ask the right questions without fear, even in the face of opposition from society.
Speaking at an event organised by the Kerala Yukthivadi Sangam to commemorate prominent rationalist and writer who went by the pen name Pavanan, the Kerala High Court judge said that his father, late TKG Nair – an author, politician and activist – was closely associated with Pavanan. Inspired by Pavanan, his father wrote under the pen name Anilan for a while, he added.
Another rationalist author Vaisakhan was also felicitated at the event for his contributions to rationalist discourse.
Justice Arun said that while Pawanan was born as Puthan Veetil Narayanan Nair, Vaisakhan was born as Gopinathan Nair. The authors chose pen names that reflected their rejection of caste-based surnames and refusal to back down from their principled stances.
Lauding Pavanan and Vaisakhan for their conviction, the Kerala High Court judge said that nowadays, rationalists like these two authors were regularly attacked on social media. Social media warriors pounced on them like vultures.
Justice Arun revealed that while considering petitions related to social media posts, he was unfortunately confronted by unsavoury language and thoughts.
He revealed that he regularly heard petitions seeking to quash cases, including criminal matters, registered on the basis of social media comments.
Justice Arun said that he had to read these posts to consider those cases. It was distressing to note that these social media posts were polluting the Malayalam language, added the judge.
Justice Arun said that he often wondered how Malayalees could debase themselves in such a manner. This was due to the lack of rationalists like Pawanan and Vaisakhan, he added.
