AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi moves Supreme Court challenging the manner for conducting SIR of electoral roll

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has approached the Supreme Court challenging the manner in which the Election Commission of India (ECI) is conducting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Advocate Nizamuddin Pasha mentioned the petition on Wednesday before a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, seeking that the matter be heard alongside other petitions concerning the electoral roll revision scheduled for October 15.

Pasha submitted that Owaisi’s plea raised issues relating to the manner in which the SIR exercise was being carried out and requested that it be tagged with the connected matters.

The Chief Justice indicated that the Court would examine the request and consider listing the petition along with the other pending cases.

Owaisi’s challenge comes amid a series of petitions before the Supreme Court questioning various aspects of the SIR exercise and the alleged deletion of voters from electoral rolls.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with 10 other Opposition leaders, has also approached the apex court raising concerns over the revision process and alleged irregularities in the deletion of electors’ names.

The pending challenges raise questions concerning the conduct of the electoral roll revision and the procedures followed by the Election Commission in carrying out the exercise.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider the connected matters on October 15. The specific grounds and reliefs sought in Owaisi’s petition were not detailed during the mentioning of the matter.

The Court has not expressed any view on the merits of his challenge.
