The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Collegium, led by Chief Justice Arun Palli, has recommended 11 names for appointment as judges. This move aims to address the significant vacancies in the court, which is operating with only 13 judges against a sanctioned strength of 25.
The Collegium has recommended the following advocates from the Bar: Vishal Sharma (presently Assistant Solicitor General of India, Jammu), Namgyal Wangchuk, Jahangir Iqbal Ganai, Pawan Kumar Kundal, Tahir Majid Shamshi (Deputy Solicitor General of India, Srinagar), Tabasum Zafar, Anupam Raina, Vikram Kumar Sharma, Amit Gupta (former Additional Advocate General), and Pranav Kohli. From the bench, Yash Paul Bourney, a senior most judicial officer and also member of J&K tribunal, has also been recommended for elevation.
The consultation process for these appointments was a collaborative effort aimed at ensuring comprehensive regional and social representation. Chief Justice Arun Palli engaged in detailed discussions with the two senior-most judges of the High Court, Justice Sanjeev Kumar and Justice Sindhu Sharma, to finalize the recommendations.
Notably, this exercise marks the first time such a large number of names have been processed simultaneously. In November, 2024, the sanctioned strength of the judges was increased from 17 to 25 judges, consisting of 19 permanent judges and 6 additional judges by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
