Delhi High Court Bar members to wear black ribbons over police action against lawyers

Members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) will wear black ribbons while attending court proceedings on Monday to protest against the police action taken against lawyers during a demonstration in the capital.

The symbolic protest follows the detention of several advocates by Delhi Police on Saturday during a demonstration seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters were opposing alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

In a notice issued on Sunday, the Bar Association called on its members to wear black ribbons in solidarity with lawyers who were allegedly manhandled during the protest. The move follows the association’s October 10 resolution condemning the police action.

The DHCBA had expressed serious concern over the alleged use of disproportionate force against demonstrators, including women advocates. It also referred to video footage that purportedly showed lawyers, including senior members of the legal fraternity, being dragged by police personnel.

The association maintained that such conduct was unacceptable and raised concerns about the dignity and constitutional rights of advocates.

Among those detained on Saturday was senior advocate Shadan Farasat, who represents petitioners challenging the SIR process before the Supreme Court. Reports said he was allegedly roughed up and dragged during the police action, leaving his shirt torn.

Senior advocate Dinesh Dwivedi was also among those detained.

Through Monday’s black-ribbon protest, the association aims to highlight its objections to the treatment of lawyers during the demonstration and express solidarity with colleagues affected by the police action.
