The Delhi High Court has deferred the implementation of its earlier decision declaring the first and third Saturdays of every month as regular court sitting days, pending a fresh examination of the issue by a committee to be constituted by the Chief Justice.
According to a notification issued by the High Court, the decision was taken by the Full Court at its meeting held on July 9, 2026. The Full Court resolved to defer its earlier resolution dated December 22, 2025, which had been notified on January 15, 2026, providing for court sittings on the first and third Saturdays of every month.
The notification states that the earlier decision will remain in abeyance until a committee appointed by the Chief Justice examines all relevant aspects concerning the proposed Saturday sittings.
The January 2026 notification had marked a significant departure from the existing court calendar by introducing additional working Saturdays with the objective of enhancing judicial functioning and case disposal. However, the latest decision indicates that the High Court has chosen to revisit the proposal before putting it into effect.
While the notification does not specify the reasons for the deferment, it makes clear that the committee will undertake a comprehensive review of all issues connected with the proposal. These are likely to include administrative feasibility, judicial workload, infrastructure requirements and the impact on members of the Bar, court staff and litigants.
The committee’s recommendations are expected to guide the Full Court in taking a final decision on whether regular sittings on the first and third Saturdays should be introduced. Until such a decision is taken, the earlier notification providing for Saturday court sittings will not be implemented, and the existing roster and working schedule of the Delhi High Court will continue unchanged.
