The Delhi High Court has strongly criticised the Union government for what it termed a lax and indifferent approach in handling the stampede incident at New Delhi Railway Station. The court underscored that matters involving public safety must be treated with utmost seriousness and not addressed in a routine or casual manner.
During the hearing, the bench expressed concern over the manner in which authorities were responding to the case, noting that overcrowding and inadequate crowd management at major transport hubs pose serious risks to commuters. The court made it clear that such incidents cannot be brushed aside and called for accountability from all concerned agencies.
Emphasising the need for concrete action, the High Court directed the Centre to ensure that effective measures are put in place to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. It also sought a detailed response outlining the steps taken so far and future plans to improve safety protocols at railway stations, especially during peak hours.
The stampede at New Delhi Railway Station had raised questions about preparedness, coordination among agencies, and the implementation of crowd control mechanisms. The court’s remarks highlight growing judicial concern over recurring lapses in public safety management and the need for systemic reforms.
The matter has been listed for further hearing, with the court expecting a more proactive and responsible stand from the Centre in the next round of proceedings.
