Justice Sanjay Kumar restricts Advocates-on-Record from approaching court staff after lawyer’s son allegedly abuses woman officer

Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Kumar on Thursday barred Advocates-on-Record from approaching court officers in his courtroom, either in person or over the telephone, after the son of an advocate allegedly used abusive language against a woman court official.

The incident came to light during mentioning proceedings in Court No. 8, when Justice Kumar called an Advocate-on-Record and questioned him about the alleged conduct of his son towards the court officer.

Expressing strong displeasure over the incident, the judge questioned whether the advocate had taught his son how to speak respectfully to a woman. He subsequently announced a change in the procedure for communicating with court staff, directing that physical appearances in matters would be granted immediately after the conclusion of the relevant case.

“Now, as a consequence of your action, from now henceforth all physical appearances will be immediately given as soon as the case is over, no one will speak to my court officers about it, be it in person or on phone. No one will approach them or speak to them,” Justice Kumar said.

The judge further criticised the alleged use of abusive and insinuating language against the woman official, emphasising that court staff perform their responsibilities diligently and should not be subjected to such conduct.

He questioned the propriety of the language allegedly used during the telephone conversation and indicated that the matter could warrant consideration by relevant representatives of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCOAORA).

Justice Kumar also warned advocates against attempting to mention matters before him by approaching court officers, making it clear that the restriction would be enforced. He expressed concern over the treatment of court personnel and said he would not tolerate their being subjected to abuse while discharging their official duties.

The judge’s remarks underscored the importance of maintaining professional decorum in interactions with judicial staff, whose administrative responsibilities are integral to the functioning of the court.

The incident prompted the judge to impose the restriction on advocates’ direct access to court officers in his courtroom, with physical appearances to be granted after the relevant matters had concluded.
