President Droupadi Murmu has underscored the imperative of coordinated global action to address the increasingly complex challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, while commending the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for providing an international platform for dialogue on the future of environmental governance.
She was addressing the valedictory session of the two-day International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics”, organised by the NGT at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
The conference brought together judges, jurists, policymakers, scientists, environmental experts and academicians from several countries to deliberate upon emerging questions concerning climate justice, environmental protection and institutional responses to ecological degradation.
Murmu expressed the hope that the deliberations would translate into meaningful action plans capable of strengthening climate resilience and promoting environmentally sustainable development. She emphasised the importance of approaches that remain inclusive while responding to the rapidly evolving environmental challenges confronting societies across jurisdictions.
The conference witnessed participation from judicial and expert representatives from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Poland, Thailand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Russia, Nepal, Maldives, Malaysia, Chile, Brazil, Bangladesh, Australia, Armenia and Algeria.
The discussions focused on the evolving architecture of environmental law and governance and the necessity of strengthening cooperation among judicial institutions, governments, scientific bodies and other stakeholders. The deliberations also examined the manner in which environmental adjudication can respond to challenges that increasingly have transboundary and inter-generational implications.
Four technical sessions were conducted during the conference, covering themes including climate justice and inclusion, the future trajectory of environmental law and governance, planetary environmental challenges and international cooperation, besides forest protection and restoration.
The forum also provided an opportunity for participating jurisdictions to exchange experiences concerning environmental adjudication, regulatory frameworks and institutional mechanisms for ecological protection.
The discussions assumed significance against the backdrop of growing demands for stronger climate governance, effective environmental enforcement and greater recognition of principles such as sustainable development, inter-generational equity and environmental justice.
The NGT’s initiative sought to facilitate a continuing dialogue between the legal, scientific and policy communities, with the objective of developing more effective and collaborative responses to environmental challenges that extend beyond national and institutional boundaries.
