Voting for the 2026 elections of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) is underway today, with members of the Supreme Court Bar casting their votes to elect the Association’s new office-bearers. The election assumes particular significance as the SCBA, the representative body of advocates practising before the Supreme Court, enters a new phase of institutional reforms. The election process is being conducted in the backdrop of directions issued by the Supreme Court emphasising greater transparency, accountability and adherence to a structured electoral framework. The Court has also endorsed several measures concerning the conduct of SCBA elections, including greater disclosure of candidates’ manifestos and accountability of elected office-bearers at the conclusion of their tenure.
Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai is among the prominent contenders in the presidential race. Rai, who has previously contested for the SCBA presidency and has been actively associated with the affairs of the Bar, has placed the professional welfare of advocates and institutional reform at the heart of his campaign. At the presidential debate held ahead of polling, Rai proposed a medical insurance cover of ₹50 lakh for advocates and spoke in favour of addressing the issue of sequencing. His campaign has sought to focus attention on the professional security of advocates, particularly the need for stronger welfare mechanisms and a more equitable working environment within the Bar.
Rai’s candidature also comes against the backdrop of a continuing judicial emphasis on making SCBA elections more transparent and accountable. The Supreme Court has previously dealt with issues arising from SCBA elections, including representations by candidates and the functioning of the Election Committee. The Court’s interventions have reinforced the principle that the electoral process of the Bar must remain transparent, orderly and consistent with the rules governing the Association.
For the electorate, therefore, the election is not merely a contest between individuals. It is also a choice between competing visions for the future governance of the Bar. Issues such as advocates’ welfare, professional opportunities, institutional representation, transparency in the functioning of the Association and greater accountability of elected representatives have figured prominently in the campaign. The verdict of the SCBA electorate will determine the leadership entrusted with representing these interests before the country’s highest constitutional court.
With polling taking place today, the contest now moves from campaign promises to the exercise of the electorate’s mandate. The result will provide a clear indication of which set of priorities has found greater resonance among members of the Supreme Court Bar and will shape the institutional direction of the SCBA for the coming term.
The other candidates for SCBA president include Mahalakshmi Pavani, Md Izhar Alam, Adish Aggarwala, Gaurav Bhatia, Anupam Lal Das, Sukumar Pattjoshi, Siddharth Mridul and KS Chauhan.
