Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai has been elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), securing a decisive mandate in the 2026 election and assuming stewardship of the premier representative body of advocates practising before the Supreme Court.
Rai emerged victorious with 822 votes, defeating Senior Advocate Anupam Lal Das, who secured 451 votes. The result places Rai at the helm of an institution whose mandate extends beyond the administration of the Association to safeguarding the professional interests, institutional dignity and welfare of the Supreme Court Bar.
The election was keenly contested, with several prominent members of the Bar entering the fray. The contest brought to the fore a range of issues concerning the functioning of the Association, professional opportunities for advocates, welfare measures and the need for greater institutional responsiveness to the concerns of members of the Bar.
Rai’s campaign was anchored in an agenda of institutional reform and professional empowerment. Among the issues highlighted were measures intended to expand opportunities for younger members of the Bar, strengthen welfare mechanisms and address structural concerns affecting advocates practising before the country’s highest constitutional court.
The mandate assumes particular significance against the backdrop of an evolving discourse on the role of Bar associations in ensuring meaningful representation and preserving the independence and institutional autonomy of the legal profession. The SCBA, as the collective representative of advocates appearing before the Supreme Court, occupies a distinctive position within India’s constitutional and legal architecture.
For Rai, the victory also marks a return to the leadership of the Association. He has previously served as its Vice President and has remained an active voice on issues concerning the Bar. His latest electoral mandate places upon him the responsibility of translating campaign commitments into tangible institutional measures and ensuring that the Association’s decision-making remains responsive to the wider interests of its membership.
The election has also assumed importance in the context of the continuing dialogue between the Bench and the Bar on issues of institutional governance, professional ethics, access to justice and the working conditions of advocates. A vibrant and autonomous Bar remains an indispensable component of the constitutional scheme, particularly in a jurisdiction where advocates perform a critical role in the administration of justice.
With the election process now concluded, the incoming leadership is expected to turn its attention towards implementation of its stated agenda. The immediate challenge will be to convert electoral assurances into actionable policies, while maintaining institutional continuity and ensuring that the SCBA remains an effective forum for deliberation, representation and collective advocacy.
The result, therefore, is not merely a change in office-bearers but a fresh mandate for the Association’s leadership
All together nine candidates were contesting for President including Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai, Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, Md Izhar Alam, Senior Advocate Adish Aggarwala, Gaurav Bhatia, Senior Advocate Anupam Lal Das, Senior Advocate Sukumar Pattjoshi, Senior Advocate Siddharth Mridul and KS Chauhan.
