The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notice on a petition seeking directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to disclose details of 65 names recently dropped from the Bihar electoral rolls published on August 1, as part of an ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The Bench of Justice Surya Kant, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice NK Singh sought response from the Election Commission and listed the matter for further hearing on August 12.
Appearing for the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), Advocate Prashant Bhushan submitted that the Election Commission published the draft roll for two constituencies, in which 65 lakh names had been omitted. The Commission, however, neither provided the list of those names, nor gave any other details. It only said 32 lakh people had migrated.
Apparently, the BLOs recommended that this person may be removed or not. Who have migrated and who were dead, he asked, seeking disclosure in two IAs.
The Apex Court observed that according to a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) followed by the ECI, representatives of each political party would be given this information.
The Counsel appearing for the ECI said that it would demonstrate that such information has been shared with representatives of political parties.
The Court asked the ECI to place on record a reply on these aspects.
