Supreme Court observes Gandhi Jayanti, speakers also pay tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri

Gandhi Jayanti and the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri were observed at the Supreme Court of India today with judges and members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) paying floral tributes to the two national leaders.

The commemorative programme at the Supreme Court complex witnessed the participation of members of the Bench and Bar, who gathered to honour Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries.

Supreme Court Judges Justice M.M. Sundresh, Justice K.V. Viswanathan, Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Joymalya Bagchi were present on the occasion. Senior Advocate and SCBA President Pradeep Rai, along with other members of the Bar Association, also participated in the programme.

Floral tributes were offered at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi located within the Supreme Court premises, while a portrait of Lal Bahadur Shastri was also garlanded as members of the legal fraternity paid their respects.

The occasion brought together the Bench and the Bar in remembrance of two figures whose public lives were closely associated with values of public service, integrity and commitment to the nation.

The Supreme Court has traditionally marked Gandhi Jayanti in association with the SCBA. According to the Supreme Court’s official record of an earlier Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti observance, the celebrations have included a cleanliness drive and floral tributes at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s photograph within the Court complex.

The Supreme Court’s official account of the earlier observance also highlighted the continuing relevance of Gandhian principles, particularly truth, non-violence and self-discipline, to the administration of justice. The Court had also linked the occasion with the broader values of integrity, accountability and constitutional commitment.

Gandhi Jayanti is observed annually on October 2 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, while the same date marks the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, India’s second Prime Minister.

The tributes at the Supreme Court thus marked the occasion not merely as a national commemoration but also as an institutional remembrance of values associated with ethical public service and the rule of law.
